Runners are a crazy bunch. It could be ten below with snow showers, and you'd still probably find multiple runners pushing through an outdoor run. After all, isn't any weather the perfect weather for running?\

The fact you're running outdoors in this weather tells me you have deeper psychological issues.

Follow these tips to stay safe (and warm) during your cold weather runs.

1. Keep those tootsies warm!
Running shoes are often made with lots and lots of mesh. This allows for better breathability and faster moisture-wicking. However, this isn't a great option for winter running. During the colder months, you want to keep your feet warm during runs. To do this, opt for shoes with less mesh and choose wool running socks. We like SmartWool socks, which run $13-$17 per pair.

2. Mid-day runs are your new best friend.
The sun is at its highest mid-day, thus the afternoon is the warmest part of your day. Try scheduling your run in the afternoon to avoid the more extreme cold of early morning or late night runs. Can't do a run during the middle of the day? Well, that brings us to our next tip.

3. Take it inside.
Sometimes it's just too cold to run outside. If this is the case, hit the treadmill or track indoors. Can't bear to run on the treadmill? Try cross-training with some of these exercises from Active.com.

4. Dressing is an art.
The winter months are an especially important time to wear tech fabrics like DriFit. They wick away sweat and ultimately keep you warmer. Make sure you have the right gear for outdoor running. We like this guide for layering advice. Remember to cover your head and wear running gloves or mittens. We prefer mittens because they keep your fingers together, which means they hold in more heat. \

5. Don't forget the basics.
People tend to overlook things like hydrating and wearing sunscreen during winter, but they still matter! Don't forget to apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses if it's bright outside. If you're running in the dark, remember to make yourself visible with reflective gear and/or neon colors.

6. Stop lingering outdoors.
Get inside and change once you finish your workout. Don't stay outside in the elements. This is common sense; it'll keep you from getting sick!

Have a tip we didn't mention? What is it? We'd love to hear from you!
